Drawing is very central to my work. Lately, I’ve returned to an early focus–that of hair. It is a substance that resists easy categorization: Is it living or dead? Why are some visions beautiful, others grotesque? Taboos around hair are found in virtually every culture, and perhaps some superstitions persist. Hair provides a thread to follow in investigating social mythology. Following the death of colleague Mike Kelley, I began to draw very worn and beloved dog toys.
