California Video at the Getty Institute

March 18th, 2008

techknowledge_boy.jpgtechknowledge_beer.jpgThe Getty Institute has acquired the archive of video art that put the Long Beach Museum of Art on the international map during the 1970s and 1980s. This will mean that irreplaceable works of video will be cleaned, transferred and saved. The exhibition, “California Video” is on view now. I’m thrilled to have Tech-Knowledge included; completed in 1984, this piece will also be included in a DVD anthology of works produced at its production facility, to be released by The Experimental Television Centre.

The Long Weekend: Installations & Performance

March 17th, 2008

680 E. Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena

Friday, March 28, Saturday March 29, Sunday March 30
7 to 10 pm

supported by PhantomGalleriesLA

Organized by Nancy Buchanan & Joseph Santarromana

Examining themes of fashion and consumption, we present durational performances and installation works in this former furniture store’s windows. Questions regarding the relationship of art and commerce today are myriad, and while there are no simple answers, most observers agree that there are many troubling implications of the influences of speculation, branding and celebrity on the current climate. Giving away the aesthetic experience through such a temporary event is a return to earlier, more idealistic times, yet placing the work within a shopping district anchors it to the realistic present. We imagine this to be an exciting event which will attract art audiences, as well as provide an unusual experience to passers-by.

3 fatesNancy Buchanan’s “3 Fates” sees myth reduced to marketing; throughout cultural history, sacred and mythic women have appeared in threes, sometimes also merging into one mythic figure. In Greek mythology, the three Fates personified destiny and controlled the thread of life from birth to death (and beyond). The Greek word moira (μοῖρα) translates as a part or portion—and so, one’s fate is the part one is destined to play in life. While their forerunners were draped in white, could the gowns worn by these fashionable “Fates” hint at what lies beyond fashion? Siren-red satin, prison-jumpsuit orange, camouflage (with glitter).

PROPAGANDA III, World Tour 2007-2008

January 17th, 2008

posterforwebsite.jpg

PROPAGANDA III invited artists from around the world to create political artwork for the third and final installment of the PROPAGANDA III art show.

Touring the globe through 2008, with dozens of one day art shows worldwide – the current schedule includes stops throughout north america, south america, australia, asia, europe, and the middle east.

NO art will be sold at any of the shows, although copies of the posters will be available for sale directly through the websites of participating artists. This is NOT a commercial art show, but rather a celebration of free speech + untrammeled freedom of expression. PROPAGANDA III opens in San Francisco on July 4, 2007. The exhibition will travel the world for at least one year, adding posters throughout the tour.

The PROPAGANDA III show will close in late 2008. All posters will then be archived at the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles.
